Srinagar, Mar 01: Acting tough against the traffic violators, Regional Transport Officer Kashmir, Dr Shahnawaz Bukhari on Friday said that staff has been empowered to cancel documents of erring drivers, having co-passenger as witness.
He was quick to add that the documents will only be revoked after the driver requalifies the driving test.
Talking to Media, Bukhari said that the violations of overloading, vehicles without fitness certificates and permits in far-flung areas and villages have become normal and will not be tolerated.
Bukhari said he has empowered the traffic and transport employees to take action against the erring drivers. If a complaint is received where a co-passenger is a witness, the registration certificate (RC) and driving license of the driver will be suspended and will be revoked only after the driver requalifies the driving test.
He appealed to all the transporters to play their role in preventing the accidents and ensuring the safety of the passengers and the public.
He also urged the religious clerics to talk about the road safety measures in their sermons so that people will have a constant reminder about their responsibilities.
He said that unless a common man adheres to the road safety measures and becomes a part of this mission, the accidents cannot be controlled.
He said that accidents can happen but when every stakeholder plays his role, they can be curbed to a greater extent. Use of mobile phone and overspeeding are the main reasons for accidents, he added.
