Extra security measures have been implemented in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar constituency in anticipation of the Lok Sabha polls scheduled for Monday, officials said.

The move aims to ensure incident-free elections and provide a secure environment for voters exercising their democratic rights.

Officials emphasized the need for stringent security measures in the Srinagar parliamentary constituency to facilitate fear-free and smooth polls.

“Keeping in view the past experience, extra security measures will be taken so that people could exercise their right to franchise in a free and secure atmosphere,” an official familiar with the arrangements told KNS.

In Baramulla, and the newly formed Anantnag-Rajouri seat, security forces have also intensified their preparations to uphold the integrity and security of the democratic process.

The Jammu and Kashmir police, along with other security agencies, have previously demonstrated their dedication to duty during the Jammu and Udhampur parliamentary elections under the guidance of the Election Commission.

Having successfully concluded polling in these constituencies, security forces have shifted their focus towards ensuring a peaceful and seamless electoral process in the upcoming parliamentary seats.

The Srinagar constituency is slated for polling on May 13, followed by Baramulla on May 20. Additionally, the elections for the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary seat, which were postponed earlier, are now rescheduled for May 25, underscoring the extensive electoral activity unfolding in the region.

In anticipation of the polling, security officials have devised a meticulous strategy to address various security concerns.

A comprehensive security blueprint is being developed to fortify polling booths based on their sensitivity, secure the strong room, and safeguard the collection and distribution centers of electronic voting machines (EVMs).

Meanwhile in preparation for the forthcoming parliamentary elections on the Baramulla seat scheduled for May 20th, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla, Amod Nagpure, revealed a series of proactive security measures aimed at ensuring a tranquil and harmonious electoral process.

SSP Nagpure provided insights into the comprehensive security strategy designed to uphold peace and stability during the elections.

Emphasizing increased vigilance, Nagpure disclosed the substantial reinforcement of police checkpoints (nakas) and intensified search operations.

He further detailed the mobilization of flying squads and static surveillance teams, equipped with state-of-the-art CCTV cameras, to swiftly address any emerging threats or disruptions, thereby ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.

Addressing concerns related to public safety, Nagpure reiterated the unwavering commitment of law enforcement to counter any attempts to sow fear or disrupt peace among the populace. He highlighted the implementation of stringent measures, including provisions under the Criminal Procedure Code (CRPC) and the Public Safety Act (PSA), to deter individuals engaged in such activities. Additionally, concerted efforts are underway to apprehend absconders, who will be afforded due legal recourse before the court.

Furthermore, Nagpure announced that licensed weapon holders have been directed to deposit their firearms at designated police stations, contributing to the maintenance of law and order. Additionally, individuals with previous involvement in activities such as stone-pelting or terrorism-related incidents, as documented in FIRs, will face legal action under CRPC provisions.

In adherence to the directives of the Election Commission of India, Nagpure stressed the significance of voter awareness and pledged to uphold the sanctity of the electoral process. He stated, “Efforts are underway to educate the public about the profound importance of their vote, fostering an environment conducive to a peaceful and transparent election.”

Simultaneously, Nagpure highlighted the crackdown on hardcore drug peddlers, signaling a comprehensive approach towards combating various forms of criminal activity in the region, thus bolstering community safety and well-being.(KNS)
