Srinagar, Apr 07: The historic Mughal Road, closed for over four months due to snow accumulation, is set to reopen for one-way traffic from Shopian to Poonch starting Monday, officials announced.
District Magistrate,Poonch issued an order stating that the road’s annual reopening is scheduled following snow clearance and landslide mitigation efforts along the route.
“With the clearance of snow accumulation and landslides from KM 19 (Dogrian) to KM 43 (Peer Ki Gali), one-way traffic movement from Bufffliaz to Peer Ki Gali is permitted from April 8, 2024,” the order stated.
Authorities have been directed to deploy personnel at key checkpoints to ensure smooth traffic flow, emphasizing strict compliance with the order.
The 90 km Mughal Road, serving as an alternative to the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, annually closes in winter due to heavy snowfall. Snow clearance operations commence with the arrival of spring.
Additionally, subject to favourable weather and road conditions, LMVs (Light Motor Vehicles) and HMVs (Heavy Motor Vehicles) will be regulated on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. LMVs will have specific cut-off timings for movement at select points along the route.
Furthermore, one-way traffic for LMVs 4X4 (passenger/load carrier) from Srinagar towards Kargil will be permitted on the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road, subject to road maintenance agency approval and adherence to specified timings.
Motorists are advised to equip their vehicles with anti-skid chains for improved traction on slippery roads, with strict enforcement of regulations for traffic safety.
