Police Commemoration Day-2022: DIG among 1604 policemen laid their lives in JK since 1989

Srinagar, Oct 21: Deputy Inspector General (DIG) among 1607 policemen laid down their lives in Jammu and Kashmir since year1989, while J&K Police ranks first in the country in the tally of Gallantry Medals bestowed upon it for their contribution and sacrifice, officials said.
As per the official figures, out of a total of 1607 police personnel including 516 SPOs and 1088 personnel of different ranks laid their lives in the line of duty since 1989.
The officials said that in recognition of their services rendered by J&K police, the successive Governments at the Union or State level have recognized the valour and supreme services of officers, jawans of this celebrated and highly decorated police force.
J&K Police ranks first in the country in the tally of gallantry medals bestowed upon it for their contribution and sacrifice in the line of duty.
The list of gallantry medals includes 01 Ashoka Chakra, 02 Kirti Chakra, 18 Shaurya Chakra, 1672 President’s Police Medal for Gallantry, Police Medal for Gallantry and 1822 Jammu & Kashmir Police Medal for Gallantry.
As per the data, this year J&K Govt has taken a historic decision naming 132 schools, colleges and roads across the region after the martyrs of the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
“The administration had announced the naming of 199 schools, colleges and roads by the names of eminent personalities and martyrs as a mark of respect for their exceptional contribution towards the security of the UT,” the officials said.
The officials further said that so far two schools have been named after martyred Deputy Superintendents, one after martyred Inspectors, eight after martyred Sub Inspectors, and four after martyred ASIs.
“Seven after martyred Head Constables, 21 after martyred SgCts, 47 after martyred constables, three after martyred followers, and 41 after martyred Special Police Officers (SPOs) who laid down their lives while protecting and safeguarding the interests of the people,” reads the data from the J&K Police.
Director General of Police (DGP) of police Dilbag Singh said they are working synergistically with the Indian Army and other Security Forces and have largely succeeded in breaking the back of Pak-sponsored terrorism in the Union Territory.
“Commanders of the Central Armed Forces have always maintained that fight against terror without JKP would not have been possible. Officers and jawans of police have faced bullets, grenades, bombs, and IEDs without any fear and their courage and valour have made the entire country proud,” he said.
