Srinagar, June 19: In a major breakthrough, the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday said that they have recovered a huge consignment of narcotics from Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. The accused person was transporting drugs from Delhi, Punjab and other states to the Valley, officials said.
Addressing the press conference in Sopore, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sopore, Shabir Nawab said that on 5th June, they had got an information that drugs are being transported to Sopore town and following which police arrested one person near Sangrama.
“On 5th June, police during a naka checking at national highway Sangrama police intercepted a vehicle wherein one person namely Altaf Ahmed Sofi of Khushal colony Tulibal, a notorious drug peddler was apprehended who during questioning confessed that a Srinagar based man is supplying banned substances to north Kashmir”, he said.
He said a case FIR No 44/2023 U/S 8/22 NDPS Act was registered in police station Tarzoo and further investigation was taken up.
“Following the lead police on 15-06-2023 during Naka at Wadoora Payeen apprehended one suspicious person Parvaiz Ahmed Bhat son of Ali Mohammad Bhat of Umerabad HMT, Srinagar who was coming from Sopore towards Wadoora. During his personal search 12 bottles of codine phosphate and Cholorphneiramine Maleate Syrup Codenext Syrup were recovered,” he said.
He added that a case FIR No 26/2023 U/S 8/22 NDPS Act PS Bomai was registered in this regard.
SSP said that during further interrogation, it came to fore that Parvaiz is the same supplier who transported banned substances from Delhi, Punjab and other states to Kashmir.
“The accused drug peddler cum supplier was identified as Mohammad Altaf (code name Jana). He had some cases before as well. We also recovered 12 bottles of Codeine from his possession and the case FIR No. 26 was registered at Police Station Bomai,” he said.
SSP Nawab said the accused later confessed that he is getting drugs from Srinagar based drug supplier Parvaiz Ahmad Bhat son of Ali Muhammad Bhat resident of Umar Abad HMT Srinagar.
During the course of investigation the accused confessed that he has stored 362 bottles of Codeine Phosphate which he has to supply among youth of Sopore.
He said drug is being smuggled into the valley from other states of the country. Sopore Police is trying to nab the drug peddlers/suppliers who are supplying drugs from outside the state to decline the drug use in Police District Sopore
“It is the biggest success for Sopore Police and we are trying to overcome this menace. We want drug free Sopore,” SSP said.
