Treatment for over 80 per cent of breast cancer survivors does not end with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Instead, doctors advise them to take medication to inhibit sex hormones, which can fuel tumour growth and cause recurrence, for the next five to ten years.
The medications are life-saving: They have been proven to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence by up to half in patients with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) tumours, the most common kind of breast cancer. Despite their stated benefits, 40 per cent of people discontinue them too soon, and a third take them less frequently than prescribed. (ANI)
