Srinagar, July 09: Underscoring the government’s commitment to proactively address potential flood-related challenges and ensure the safety and well-being of the residents of Jammu and Kashmir, the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha paid a visit to Zero Bridge today to assess the overall readiness and preparedness for effective flood management.
During his interaction with officials from the Irrigation and  Flood Control Department, the Lieutenant Governor emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring of water levels and the prompt dissemination of early warnings to all relevant agencies in real time.
The Chief Engineer of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department briefed the Lieutenant Governor on the comprehensive measures undertaken by all stakeholders involved to tackle any emergent situations effectively. Notably, the department has successfully installed five automatic Water Level Recorders on River Jhelum and nine on its tributaries. These recorders enable the real-time monitoring of water levels, which are then analyzed and shared with all concerned stakeholders.
The Lieutenant Governor was apprised of the current situation, revealing that the flood scenario has been averted for now, with water levels at Sangam receding and the overall situation under control. Expressing his satisfaction, he commended the efforts of the authorities in mitigating potential risks.
Lieutenant Governor Sinha also enquired about the progress of Phase (II) works under the Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP). He instructed the concerned department to expedite flood management projects, with particular emphasis on the Flood Spill Channel, in order to safeguard the lives and properties of the public.
Accompanying the Lieutenant Governor during the visit were Dr. Mandeep Kumar Bhandari, Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor; Vijay Kumar, ADGP Kashmir; Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir; Mohammad Aijaz, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, and several other senior officers.
