Baramulla, Aug 29: The body of Gurmeet Singh, an engineer from the Roads and Buildings department who had been missing for six days, was discovered on Tuesday morning in the Jhelum River near the LHJP project in the Gantamulla area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Singh’s disappearance had triggered a massive search operation by local authorities and agencies after he left his home on August 25 to carry out work in the local market.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed by Baramulla Police, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Baramulla, to look into the case.
In addition to the SIT, the police enlisted the assistance of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), a Canine squad, and drone surveillance to aid in the search.
A police official said that Singh’s body was sighted in a barrage of the Lower Jhelum Hydroelectric power project.
The body was subsequently recovered from the site and shifted to AHGMC Baramulla for necessary medico-legal procedures.
While authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Singh’s death, District Police Baramulla has requested the media to refrain from sharing photos and videos of the deceased engineer on social media platforms out of respect for his family.
The police assured the public that further details will be shared as they become available.
Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Panzala Rafiabad area of Baramulla, was missing since August 25 when he left his home at Kanth Bagh to visit a nearby market.
Family members said that his car was found abandoned between Eco Park and Sheeri by the Jhelum side, and his mobile phone was in flight mode.
In the meantime, members from both the minority and majority communities united in a peaceful protest, advocating for a prompt and unbiased inquiry into the unexplained passing of Er. Gurmeet.
A family member of the deceased said that Er. Gurmeet, known as a kind-hearted officer, would not have contemplated suicide.
“The sentiment of self-inflicted harm didn’t align with his character,” he said.
“While the police and law enforcement agencies are diligently fulfilling their responsibilities, our primary concern is obtaining clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding our brother’s untimely death,” the relative stated.
