Srinagar, July 18: In a landmark step for the advancement of water-based adventure and competitive sports in the Union Territory, a high-level delegation of athletes, office bearers and key stakeholders from the water sports fraternity today met the Hon’ble Sports Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Satish Sharma.According to a statement issued here, the delegation, led by Dr Burhan Bazaz, President of the J&K Rowing and Sculling Association, included senior stakeholders such as Dr Imran Nazir, Hussain Khan, Latif Ahmad, and others. The interaction was described as warm and constructive, with all parties united by a shared vision to establish Jammu and Kashmir as a national and global hub for water sports like rowing, sculling, kayaking, and canoeing. The delegation highlighted the consistent medal-winning performances of J&K athletes at national-level championships, achieved in spite of limited infrastructure and institutional backing. These successes, they noted, have been largely due to the dedication of internationally acclaimed water sports coach and athlete, Bilquis Mir, whose mentorship has inspired a new generation. Dr Bazaz and others underscored the enormous potential of the region, blessed with natural water bodies such as Dal Lake, Wular Lake, Manasbal, Ranjit Sagar, and Mansar Lake, to host major championships, training camps, and festivals. These events could serve the dual purpose of promoting sporting excellence and boosting eco-tourism, youth employment, and local economic growth. The delegation pointed out that many young people living near these water fronts already possess innate paddling skills, which, with proper coaching and access to equipment, could be harnessed to develop world-class athletes. They called for investment in structured training programmes, better access to facilities, and stronger grassroots support.Several concerns were raised, including delays in facility access, lack of equipment, and insufficient financial assistance for emerging athletes. Minister Satish Sharma gave a patient hearing and assured the delegation that their genuine grievances would be addressed swiftly. In a gesture of encouragement, the Minister announced a cash prize of Rs 25,000 for recent national medal winners, lauding their discipline and commitment. “Your achievements have made the UT proud,” he remarked, while urging associations to submit detailed proposals for future events, coaching schedules, and infrastructural needs. Young athlete Zahid shared a heartfelt message during the meeting: “I am deeply inspired by Bilquis Mir. Her journey and guidance have motivated me to pursue excellence. I am fortunate to be mentored by her.”
