Jammu, Jun 02: Communist Party of India (CPI) Jammu and Kashmir on Monday commemorated the 4th death anniversary of its leader Mohammad Yousuf Bhat on Monday at a meeting held at the party headquarters here.
The party members and senior leaders gathered to remember the life and legacy of a leader who dedicated himself tirelessly to the cause of social justice, workers’ rights, and progressive change.
Bhat was widely regarded as a committed socio-political activist and a steadfast advocate for justice and equality, the party said in a statement issued here. “Throughout his life, he remained deeply involved in championing the rights of the working class and marginalised communities, striving to bring about meaningful social transformation in the region.”
One of Bhat’s significant contributions was the founding of Awami Moazin in 1995, an independent newspaper launched alongside veteran trade union leader Abdul Ghani Hafiz, the CPI said. The publication was known for its progressive outlook and commitment to truthful, unbiased reporting, providing a platform for voices that were often sidelined in mainstream media. Awami Moazin played an important role in raising awareness on labour issues, social inequalities, and political developments in Jammu and Kashmir.
At the commemoration event, senior CPI leaders, including Comrade Rakesh Sharma, Comrade Naresh Munshi and Comrade Sanjay Kotwal, paid glowing tributes to Bhat’s enduring legacy.
Comrade Sharma highlighted Bhat’s unwavering commitment to the working class and his role in strengthening the left movement in the region. Comrade Munshi praised his principled stance on justice and secularism, while Comrade Kotwal recalled Bhat’s mentorship of younger activists and his role as a unifying force within the party.
The leaders collectively reaffirmed their commitment to carrying forward Bhat’s vision of social equality and justice, pledging to uphold the values he championed. The event concluded with a moment of silence in his memory and a renewed call for continued activism inspired by his life’s work.
During the meeting, glowing tributes were also paid to the elder brother of Comrade Des Raj Manhas, Assistant Secretary, who passed away last week following a brief illness.
