Srinagar, April 18: The Postgraduate Department of Minimal Access and General Surgery at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Association of Surgeons of India (JAKASI), Friday hosted a Live Operative Workshop on Advanced Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal and Gynaecological Oncosurgery at the GMC Auditorium.
The event drew participation from leading surgical faculty and postgraduate students across the region. A major highlight of the workshop was the presence of internationally acclaimed laparoscopic Oncosurgeon, Dr Shailesh Puntambekar from Galaxy Hospital, Pune. Dr Puntambekar demonstrated his exceptional surgical expertise through live procedures including Laparoscopic Whipple’s Procedure, Laparoscopic Low Anterior Resection (LAR) for Carcinoma Rectum, and Laparoscopic Wertheim’s Hysterectomy for Carcinoma Endometrium, setting new standards in minimally invasive cancer surgery. The inaugural ceremony was held under the patronage of Prof Dr Iffat Hassan Shah, Principal and Dean of GMC Srinagar. Dr Puntambekar was the Guest of Honour, joined by Prof Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal GMC Anantnag, and Prof Dr Fazl-ul-Qadir Parray, Principal SKIMS Medical College, as special guests.
Special recognition was accorded to Prof (Dr) Iqbal Saleem Mir, Head of the Department of Surgery and Organising Chairman, whose visionary leadership and dedication were instrumental in the event’s success. His unwavering commitment to surgical education continues to inspire upcoming generations of surgeons in the region. The workshop offered four Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit hours and reaffirmed GMC Srinagar’s reputation as a centre of academic excellence and clinical innovation.
