Srinagar, March 26: The Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has launched a pioneering “Head Injury Awareness Programme” to address the growing incidence of head trauma in Kashmir. Led by the Departments of Neurosurgery and Neuroanaesthesia, the initiative aims to enhance public awareness, promote preventive measures, and improve emergency response strategies.
Under the leadership of Director SKIMS and EOSG, Prof. (Dr) Mohammad Ashraf Ganie, the programme will focus on community education through workshops, seminars, and door-to-door campaigns. It will emphasise recognising early signs of head trauma, such as confusion, vomiting, and loss of consciousness. Prevention strategies will highlight helmet use, road safety, and child protection measures. Additionally, first responder training will be provided to police officers, teachers, and drivers, equipping them with essential emergency response skills. Awareness campaigns will extend to schools and colleges, with digital resources, pamphlets, and posters in local languages distributed widely.
Prof. Ganie stressed that head injuries are preventable, and that early detection and prompt medical intervention can significantly reduce long-term complications and save lives. He commended the Departments of Neurosurgery and Neuroanaesthesia for their leadership in launching the initiative, aligning it with SKIMS’ broader mission of excellence in community healthcare. The event was attended by medical professionals, police officials, students, and members of the public, reflecting strong community engagement. Dr Sarabjit Singh Chibber, Head of Neurosurgery, urged people to prioritise safety and seek immediate medical attention for head injuries, emphasising that awareness can reduce long-term complications and improve outcomes.
