Srinagar, Mar 16: The scenic hill station of Sonamarg in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has experienced a increase in tourist arrivals during the first two months of 2025. From January 1 to March 10, a total of 1,33,854 visitors explored its snow-covered landscapes, signaling a positive shift for the region’s tourism industry.
According to the Department of Tourism, January alone saw 55,934 tourists, including 1,114 foreign visitors and an equal number of domestic tourists. February continued the upward trend with 57,186 visitors, comprising 2,019 international tourists and 1,565 locals. From March 1 to March 10, Sonamarg welcomed an additional 20,734 tourists.
In comparison, Sonamarg attracted nearly 8 lakh tourists in total last year. The early 2025 numbers reflect a strong start, particularly given the traditionally harsh winter months that once made the region largely inaccessible.
Industry stakeholders attribute the rise in visitors to improved accessibility, thanks to the Sonamarg tunnel, which has remained operational throughout the winter. In the past, heavy snowfall would cut off the area for three to four months, but the new tunnel has made the region accessible year-round. This development has been a game-changer for hoteliers, travel agents, and local businesses who rely on tourism for their livelihoods.
The growing tourist influx is not only a positive sign for Sonamarg but also for the broader resurgence of winter tourism in Kashmir, a trend that is expected to benefit the entire valley.
