Jammu, March 15: Concerns have surfaced over alleged illegal tax collections by municipal bodies on the National Highway-249 in areas including Kishtwar, Thathri, Doda, and Batote. The issue was raised in the Legislative Assembly by MLA Mehraj Malik, seeking clarification from the government on the matter.
In response, the Minister In-charge of Housing and Urban Development confirmed that while there had been complaints regarding unauthorized tax collection at certain municipal barriers, the government has taken action to address the issue.
A circular (No. BULBS/2025/7558-60 dated 01.03.2025) was issued by the Director of Urban Local Bodies, Jammu, directing all CEOs and Executive Officers of Municipal Councils and Committees to immediately halt the collection of “Adda Tax” from vehicles not utilizing any municipal infrastructure.
Additionally, through letter No. DULBJ/2025/6722-25 dated 01.02.2025, municipal bodies were instructed to strictly follow the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Act, 2000, and the National Highway (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002, in line with the High Court’s directives issued in WP No. 2543/2019.
The government assured that steps are being taken to ensure such illegal practices are curbed and proper parking facilities are addressed through lawful means.
