• CM inaugurates the much-awaited bridge bringing joy to villagers
Ganderbal, Feb 22: In a major development for Central Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the 82-meter-long Akhal Bridge over the River Sind in the Kangan area of Ganderbal district on Saturday. The bridge, built at a cost of ₹8 crore by the Public Works (Roads and Buildings) Department, connects several villages in the Kunmul-Akhal area and surrounding regions.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister highlighted that the Akhal Bridge would greatly enhance transportation, stimulate economic activity, and improve the quality of life for thousands of residents in the district. He expressed confidence that the bridge would serve as a key link, driving development and providing much-needed relief to the local population.
The Chief Minister said that the completion of the bridge marks the resolution of long-standing connectivity issues in the area. Local public representatives and residents expressed their gratitude to the Chief Minister for fulfilling their long-standing demand, which will now offer greater convenience and accessibility.
Among those present at the ceremony were MLA Kangan Mian Mehar Ali, Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, DDC members, Chief Engineer R&B, and other senior civil and police officers.
Construction of the bridge began in 2008 after the foundation stone was laid, but it faced multiple delays over the years, leaving locals frustrated. However, the bridge’s completion has been welcomed with widespread relief. Residents referred to its opening as the realization of a long-held dream.
“This bridge connects several villages on the opposite side of the River Sindh. It was desperately needed for our daily commute and overall development,” said a local resident. “We are thankful to the government and officials for making it a reality.”
During the ceremony, locals also raised concerns about the need for road widening along the approach to the bridge, urging the R&B Department to address this issue for smoother connectivity. They expressed their appreciation to MLA Mian Mehar Ali and R&B officials for their efforts in completing the project.
The Akhal Kangan Bridge is expected to significantly improve connectivity, promote economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for residents in surrounding villages. Its completion represents a major milestone in the region’s infrastructure development.
