Srinagar, Feb 18: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday emphasised the importance of spreading awareness about the new criminal laws in Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah on the implementation of the three new criminal laws, Omar stressed that while enforcement is key, it is equally vital for the public to be informed about these laws.
“The discussion on these laws should extend to universities, colleges, and the assembly to ensure better public understanding,” he said, highlighting the need for widespread awareness.
Omar further said that while the implementation of these laws was reviewed in 11 states and Union Territories, the focus has now shifted to Jammu and Kashmir. He added that the J&K administration had largely been on track with the laws, though some weaknesses were identified and would be addressed.
Asked about the role of the elected government in the implementation of these laws, Omar clarified that while the law enforcement aspect is separate, raising public awareness is essential. He assured that the government would take the necessary steps in this regard.
When questioned about security discussions, Omar confirmed that security was not a topic in this particular meeting. He mentioned that during a previous meeting with the Home Minister in Parliament, the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir had been addressed.
Responding to questions about his absence from two recent meetings, Omar explained that the meeting with Amit Shah was specifically focused on the new criminal laws, whereas the previous meetings were security-related. On security matters, he said that it is the government’s prerogative to decide whether or not to include the elected government in discussions.
