Ganderbal, Jan 15: Around 20 participants showcased their skills at the thrilling ice-skating event amidst breathtaking slopes at the Sonamarg tourist resort of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district
The event includes several national-level players and serves as a preparation platform for the upcoming Khelo India Winter Games.
Shifa Tariq, one of the participants, shared her experience with Rising Kashmir. “We are participating in this ice-skating event to prepare for Khelo India. Last year, the rink wasn’t fully frozen due to unfavourable temperatures, and we had to practice on a half-frozen rink. This year, with the lower temperatures, the rink is fully frozen, and our practice sessions are much better.” She added that evening practice sessions, when temperatures are lowest, have improved their techniques.
Wafa Tariq, another participant with a decade of skating experience, noted significant improvements this year. “Compared to last year, the rink is much better, but I appeal to the government to extend this camp by 15 to 20 days so we can practice more effectively,” she said. Highlighting the difference between local and national-level infrastructure, she added, “The rinks at national events are broader, and Sonamarg’s infrastructure needs further improvement to nurture talent in the region.”
National coach Ashraf Digoo thanked J&K Tourism, the Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA), and local hoteliers for supporting the ongoing event. “This rink is small and needs further development. The international youth hostel area, which is more spacious, would be an ideal location for a larger rink,” he suggested.
