Over 1,000 cameras installed to improve traffic safety in Srinagar

Srinagar, Dec 19: In a major step towards better traffic management, over 1,000 cameras have been installed across Srinagar under the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), Owais Ahmad, CEO of Srinagar Smart City, said on Thursday.
The new system aims to reduce traffic violations and improve safety on the roads.
Speaking to reporters, Owais Ahmad explained that the cameras are designed to detect a range of traffic violations, including not wearing seatbelts or helmets, using mobile phones while driving, and jumping red lights. Soon, the system will also track speeding violations. On its first day of operation, around 102 challans were issued automatically. Once a vehicle’s number plate is captured, a challan is generated, and the driver is required to pay the fine.
The ITMS is already operational at 33 out of the 66 junctions in Srinagar. Due to some technical issues, the remaining signals are not yet working, but the CEO assured that efforts are underway to fix these problems, with full functionality expected soon.
The ITMS uses advanced technology such as high-resolution cameras and radar sensors to monitor traffic at key intersections and highways. The system collects real-time data and uses computer algorithms to provide quick insights into traffic violations and patterns, helping authorities take immediate action.
In addition to improving traffic regulation, the ITMS system is part of the larger effort to modernize urban management in Srinagar. The Integrated Command & Control Centre (ICCC), which monitors the cameras, also supports other smart city initiatives. The ICCC is equipped with advanced facilities like a data centre, network operations centre, and emergency communication hubs, all designed to make the city smarter and safer, Ahmad added.
With the introduction of the e-challan system and advanced monitoring tools, Srinagar aims to set a new standard in urban traffic management, ensuring safer roads for its citizens.
