Srinagar, Dec 19: Sheikh Ashiq, Board of Director on Carpet Export Promotional Council has said that the influx of duplicates has threatened the very existence of Kashmir’s exquisite handicrafts.
In a statement issued, he said mass production of fake handicrafts has flooded the market, making it difficult for authentic artisans to sell their products.
He said the increasing demand for cheaper, machine-made products has led to a decline in the use of traditional techniques and skills.
The handicraft industry, Ashiq said is a significant contributor to Kashmir’s economy. “The decline of this industry threatens the livelihoods of thousands of artisans.”
He urged government to ensure quality control measures to prevent the sale of duplicates. “Strict measures have to be taken against the sellers of these fake machine made carpets and provide financial support to artisans.”
He called for launching campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of buying authentic, handmade handicrafts.
