Srinagar, Dec 14: Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and MLA Kulgam, Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami has strongly criticised the Central government’s proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, terming it as a means of undermining people’s democratic rights.
Addressing a press conference here, Tarigami said, “They want to create autocratic rule in India. Cutting across the party lines, all politicians and the public should oppose it strongly.” He urged leaders and citizens from all political affiliations to unite against the initiative, emphasising the importance of safeguarding democracy and pluralism in the country.
The ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, which aims to synchronise elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, has sparked widespread debate across the political spectrum. While proponents argue that it will reduce election costs and ensure stability, critics, including Tarigami, view it as a threat to federalism and democratic diversity.
The CPI(M) leader called for a united and determined response to oppose “any move that compromises democratic values”. (KNS)
