Ganderbal, Aug 29: National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullah on Thursday said every election is significant and that none should be taken lightly. He said the upcoming elections are crucial to bolster the strength of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.
Interacting with media persons here, Omar highlighted the strategic importance of forming alliance(s) to secure the maximum number of seats in the Pir Panjal region, which he believes is crucial to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from gaining a foothold in the area.
When asked about his altered stance on election participation, the former chief minister criticised the “hypocrisy” of his critics. “Those accusing me of compromising my principles have themselves nominated their relatives and close associates in the assembly elections,” he said.
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, he conceded that while the current assembly may not hold the same strength as it once did, the upcoming elections present an opportunity to reinforce its authority and effectiveness.
On Awami Itihad Party (AIP) Chief Engineer Rashid’s bail, Omar said that the court, not the electoral vote, determines bail. It is important to consider the conditions under which Er Rashid could be released if bail is granted.
Abdullah said every election must be taken seriously. He termed his recent defeat in the north Kashmir Lok Sabha election as a “reminder of the competitive nature of politics in the region”.
About his contest against the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Bashir Ahmad Mir in Ganderbal, the NC leader said, “No election is easy. Contesting an election is always a challenge.”
