Ganderbal, July 30: Residents of Bonibagh, a town in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, have been forced to migrate to safer areas following continuous land sinking over the past twelve hours, local sources report.
Panic spread through the town on Monday evening as the land began sinking. Residents attribute the issue to the Hyder Canal, which runs through the upper part of the town. They report that water from the canal is leaking, causing the land to sink.
The situation has compelled the local population to relocate to avoid potential harm and financial loss. Concerns are heightened by a previous incident in 2020 when a shopping complex was damaged by landslides in the same area, resulting in losses worth crores. Despite assurances from the administration at that time that land would be provided to affected residents, no such provision has been made.
Javaid Ahmad, a local resident, stated that he has informed the District Administration of the current situation. The administration has promised to dispatch a team to assess the area and submit a report.
Residents are urgently appealing to the administration to take immediate steps to address the issue and prevent further difficulties.
