68th NSG Wushu Championship concludes: J&K becomes overall Champion, Delhi lifts boys title; Suryansh, Ahilya sparkle

Time ripe to categorise sports; train teachers, coaches in specific disciplines: Tara

Jammu, Nov 26: Winning a total of 10 medals with 4 Gold, 5 Silver and one Bronze. Jammu and Kashmir became overall Champion in U-17 Boys and Girls Wushu Championship, which concluded at Indoor Sports Complex Bhagwati Nagar here on Tuesday.
The Championship was organised by the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports J&K, under the auspices of School Games Federation of India (SGFI).
Director General Youth Services and Sports Sh Rajinder Singh Tara was the chief guest on the Prize Distribution Function, who alongwith Joint Director Youth Services and Sports Jammu Sh Ved Prakash; Deputy Director Youth Services and Sports Central Sh Jitendra Mishra; Competition Director, Chief Wushu Coach of India and Dhronacharya Awardee Sh Kuldeep Handoo and DYSSO Jammu Ms Harvinder Kaur presented medals to the winners.

While Jammu and Kashmir emerged overall Champion in U-17 Boys and Girls category, it remained at the top in the Girls category with 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze medal, Maharashtra with 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals got the second place and Chandigarh with 1 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze medals remained at the third spot, while in the Boys category, Delhi won 1st place by clinching 3 Gold and 3 Bronze medals, J&K remained at the second spot, winning 2 Gold and 3 Silver medals, while Uttar Pradesh bagged the third place, securing 2 Gold medals.

The Gold medal winners from J&K included Suryansh Singh, Mohd Arham Parray, Jiya Manhas and Aliza Shah, while the Silver medalists from J&K were Mehran Amin, Umaan Arif, Haseeb, Saliqa Farooq and Sadiya Gulzar and the Bronze medal was claimed by Anum Ajaz.

Earlier, in -60 kg boys category, Suryansh Singh of J&K toppled Rudraksh of Rajasthan to win Gold, in -70 kg category, Mohd Arham Parray of J&K defeated Laishram Puinachandra of Manipur in final bout to bag Gold, in -75 kg category
Mehran Amin Bangoo of J&K lost to Vipul Khatri of Delhi in final bout and won Silver, in -80 kg category Umaan Arif of J&K lost to Prashant Kumar of CBSE in final bout and won Silver, in -85 kg category Mohd Haseeb Sohil of J&K lost to Prince Kumar of Delhi in final to claim Silver medal.

In the Girls category final bouts, in -45kg weight category Jiya Manhas of J&K beat Bhumika of Chandigarh to win Gold, in -52 kg category Saliqa Farooq of J&K lost to Zureem Pegu of Assam in the final bout and won Silver, in -60 kg category, Aliza Shah of J&K trounced Riya Mishra of Rajasthan to claim Gold, in -70 kg category Sadiya Gulzar of J&K lost to Ahilya Lavate of Maharashtra in final bout and won Silver.

Suryansh Singh of J&K and Ahilya Lavate of Maharashtra were adjudged as the best Players of the Championship.

Addressing to various media agencies on the occasion, the Director General Youth Services and Sports Sh Rajinder Singh Tara said that the time was ripe to categorise sports in order to yeild better results.

He said J&K athletes were immensely talented and the only need was to catch them young and coach them, adding that the sports department was leaving now stone unturned in serving as a nursery to cater to the needs of young sportspersons.

Mr Tara further said that to unearth the talent at the grass-root level, the fundamental need was to hold refresher courses in order to train Physical Education Teachers, Coaches and Trainers in specific sports disciplines, adding that the steps have already been taken in this regard.

Meanwhile, around 600 players and officials drawn from 21 States/UTs across the country took part in this mega event, which was as part of the historic series of 68th National School Games in the disciplines of Judo, Fencing, Wushu and Football, wherein around 4000 athletes and officials across the country are taking part.
