Baramulla, Sep 01: Police in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday said they have registered 213 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and apprehended 343 drug peddlers, including 80 of the most wanted individuals in the trade.
Police also said that it attached properties belonging to these drug smugglers valued at crores of rupees.
A police official said that among the 343 arrested, 54 habitual drug peddlers have been booked under the Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, as well as the Public Safety Act (PSA). The crackdown has also resulted in the confiscation of contraband valued at crores in the black market.
“One of the remarkable achievements of the operation is the attachment of properties worth 2.1 crores belonging to drug smugglers,” the police official said, adding, “This includes the seizure of three houses, three vehicles, and cash amounting to Rs 1.2 crore in various locations such as Pattan, Kreeri, Nambla, and Kamalkote.”
Police said that SAFEM (FOP) A & NDPSA, New Delhi confirmed the attachment of illegally acquired property by drug smugglers in the areas of Pattan and Kreeri, including houses and vehicles.
Baramulla Police remains steadfast in its commitment to crack down on drug smugglers and the illicit drug trade in the district, he said, adding, “The police department is determined to take strict actions, including the attachment of movable and immovable property that has been used for illicit trafficking by drug smugglers.”
Police have urged the general public to come forward with any information regarding drug peddlers in their areas, with the assurance that their identities will be kept confidential. “This collaborative effort between law enforcement and the community is essential in eradicating the menace of drugs from society, exemplifying a robust police-public relationship,” the police official said.
