21st Livestock Census: AHD targets to survey 804 villages, 154 municipal wards across Jammu district

Jammu, Dec 02: Director Animal Husbandry Department Jammu Dr. Waheeda Parveen on Monday kick-started 21st Livestock Census in Jammu district here at the office of Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Satwari in presence of senior officers and officials of department besides the staff deployed for conduct of census.
Around 200 supervisors and enumerators – mostly veterinary doctors and para-vets will be involved in this activity who shall survey 804 villages and 154 municipal wards through door-to-door visits.
Speaking on the occasion, the Director said that the Livestock census is being conducted in the country every five years since the year 1919 and is of great importance to tabulate the population of livestock and poultry so as to formulate and implement various welfare schemes for livestock farmers from time to time. She further said that the census is to be conducted across the Nation under the overall control of Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt. of India and is expected to be completed by February 2025.
Elaborating further, the Director said that this census will be fully digitized involving online data collection through mobile application, monitoring at various levels through digital dashboards and generation of census reports through software. “Sixteen species of livestock and poultry are covered and data will be taken from each household/ household enterprise”, she said.
The participation of women in livestock rearing will be depicted in the 21st livestock census besides gender-wise population of stray animals shall also be recorded which will also help municipal authorities in assessment of stray animal population and further formulation of policy in this regard.
