Ladakh, May 28: In a significant move to bolster technical education opportunities for students from Ladakh, the Department of Higher Education of the Union Territory (UT) has secured 16 reserved seats in various diploma level technical courses for the academic session 2024-25. This initiative, part of the Government of India’s broader scheme, aims to support states and UTs that lack sufficient infrastructure for technical education.
The reserved seats span institutes across eight states and UTs: Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh, Karnataka, and Gujarat. The courses available to Ladakhi students include Mechanical Engineering, Pharmacy, Textile Technology, Library and Information Science, Automobile Engineering, Bio-Medical Engineering, and Fashion Designing.
Eligibility criteria for these diploma courses require students to clear their Class X Board exams for most disciplines, while those aiming for a diploma in Pharmacy must clear their Class XII Board exams. While the CBSE results have already been declared, the results from the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) are still pending. Applications for the reserved seats will open immediately after the declaration of JKBOSE results.
This reservation follows the successful implementation of a similar scheme in the 2023-24 academic session, which saw 22 seats reserved for Ladakhi students in degree-level engineering courses across various institutes in Chandigarh, Maharashtra, Kolkata, Karnataka, Gujarat, Hyderabad, and Tamil Nadu. Last year, 19 students from Ladakh successfully secured admission under this scheme.
The continued support for diploma and degree-level technical education is set to provide significant opportunities for the youth of Ladakh, facilitating their pursuit of careers in various engineering and technical fields.
