Srinagar, June 13: The northern railways is considering installing high-end CCTV cameras in all 16 major railway stations in Jammu division in order to improve surveillance systems, officials said on Tuesday.
According to a top official at Northern Railways, they are considering increasing surveillance at all divisional railway stations, including 16 Jammu stations.
“By strategically placing CCTV cameras throughout railway stations, security personnel can gain a broader view of the premises, including key areas such as platforms, entrances, waiting areas, ticketing counters, and parking lots. With this increased coverage, we will be able to better monitor and respond to any security incidents or emergencies,” he said.
According to the official, they will establish control at Jammu station to monitor all of these stations, and technical teams from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) will examine the footage.
“These cameras can record video in real time, allowing security personnel to monitor activities and respond quickly to any suspicious or illegal incidents.” This can help prevent dangerous situations from escalating and allow for immediate intervention if necessary,” he said.
The project will be completed by Jan 2024 as railways will be connected with the Kashmir valley. “Before that deadline, work on all stations will be completed,” he said.
The CCTV’s cameras will be setup in Kathua,Budhi, ChhanArorian, ChakDayala,Hira Nagar, Ghagwal, Samba, Basantar,Sangar, Manwal, Ramnagar, Udhampur, ChakRakhwal, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway stations respectively.
Meanwhile, Public Relation Officer, Northern Railways Neeraj Sharma did not respond despite repeated attempts to call him.
Chief Area Manager (CAM) Kashmir, SaqibYousufYatoo (IRTS) told Rising Kashmir that they have installed CCTV cameras along major railway stations in Kashmir.
“Security cameras in railway stations are aimed at ensuring the safety of rail passengers; over 16 railway stations have received the electronic eyes,” he explained.
“We intend to install complaint or suggestion boxes in railway stations to encourage rail passengers to record their grievances and suggestions to improve passenger-friendly facilities in railway stations and trains,” Sakib explained.
Railway stations include the BaramullaBanihal section. Some of them were recently installed including HamrayPattan, Qazigund, Baramulla, Chadoora, and Banihal.
“We have installed both bullet cameras and 360 cameras. It will help to keep track of everything along stations. They will be monitored from Budgam headquarters and will help curb theft, crime, and surveillance,” he said.
Sakib said CCTV cameras of stations and video feeds are being monitored at three levels to ensure enhanced safety and security at railway premises.
This will give Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials an extra edge in ensuring enhanced security. The recording of video feeds from CCTV cameras will be stored for 30 days, he said.
At present, 19 train services with seven trains chug regularly on Baramulla- Banihal sector in J&K. About 30,000 passengers including students and office goers travel in the trains every day.
The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway (USBRL) is being constructed to connect Kashmir to the rest of the country. It comes under the jurisdiction of the Firozpur Railway Division of Indian Railways’ Northern Zone.
The 359 m (1,178 ft) tall Chenab Bridge lies on this line, which once completed will be the tallest railway bridge in the world.
