There is a need to encourage the sporting activities in Jammu and Kashmir. Not just cricket and football but all the other games which are played should be provided with adequate infrastructure and facilities. The government needs to support the sports culture as such Jammu and Kashmir. All the sporting activities in Jammu and Kashmir require urgent attention. Measures that can give impetus and lead to the revival of sports culture in Jammu and Kashmir are needed. There is no dearth of sport talent in our valley; from football to base ball, golf to Cricket, all types of sport are actively played in J&K. However, what prevents the player to come forward and exhibit their talent fully is the lack of basic infrastructure. There are a number of sports departments in Jammu and Kashmir which are established to promote sport and games in Jammu and Kashmir, but when it comes to assessing their respective performances it’s all dismal and disappointing. Hardly anything worthwhile has been done so far which could help the players in honing their skills. That our sports departments are in need of an overhauling stands beyond any doubt. Besides, there has been a long list of complaints on part of players, ranging from lack of infrastructure to absence of career options. There are no standard grounds, no quality coaches and no methodical ways to enter a game and follow ones interest. Above all there are no agencies which could help secure the financial needs of the players. These are the main concerns for the players and so far nothing substantial has been done on government’s front. If sports have to pick in Jammu and Kashmir, a professional approaches needs to be adopted. For this purpose, government can seek the participation of private and corporate sector. If the government can persuade the financers from other states to come and finance any sporting events it will do a world of good to the confidence of sports personalities and the sporting culture. If we start this process by selecting various under-16 and under-19 tournaments that can prove very beneficial for the young players and help in nurturing the sports culture at grass roots level. Previously, a few business houses came forward and raised their respective cricket and football teams and also sponsored a large number of local tournaments. This trend needs to be encouraged, to make sports grow in J&K.
