Srinagar, Dec 15: Renowned political figure Zaffer Mir (Lasjan) on Friday extended his support for the Women’s Reservation Bill, lauding it as a pivotal stride towards empowering women both at the national level and specifically within the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement issued here, Mir highlighted that this bill, officially known as the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act, endeavours to allocate 33% reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies which was a long-standing demand of women folk that has finally come to fruition.
“The introduction of two bills in the Lok Sabha to extend the provisions of this critical law to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is a significant and essential step. It aims to redress historical disparities by fostering greater representation and participation of women in legislative assemblies which remains an imperative move towards reinforcing gender equality in politics,” he expressed.
He further emphasized that this legislation will facilitate increased involvement of women in decision-making processes that will help to achieve gender parity in the political landscape.
“Now the voices of women within legislative structures will get a vocal representation because they were the ones whose presence remained suppressed and miniscule in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
He added, “This initiative is aimed at rectifying the longstanding issue of women’s under-representation in positions of power while marking a pivotal moment in empowering women within the political sphere.”
