Anantnag, July 21: The Department of Youth Services and Sports (YSS), Anantnag, conducted a series of sporting events across various zones, including Kho-Kho and Cricket tournaments, alongside a district-level coaching camp in Kabaddi aimed at preparing young athletes for state-level contests.As per a statement issued here, in Zone Bijbehara, the Inter-School Zonal Level Kho-Kho Tournament for Under-17 boys concluded successfully at the PM Shri Government Middle School Pazalpora. Organised by the Zonal Physical Education Office, the tournament saw enthusiastic participation from around 50 students representing various High and Higher Secondary Schools. After a closely fought series of matches, Oxford High School Bijbehara emerged as champions, while Higher Secondary School Marhama finished as runners-up. Simultaneously, in Zone Doru, the semi-final and final matches of the Under-14 Inter-School Cricket Tournament were held at Kabamarg Playfield. The event began with an Anti-Drug Pledge, raising awareness among students about the harmful effects of substance abuse and promoting sport as a constructive alternative.A total of 64 players from four teams took part in the tournament. In the first semi-final, Whiz Kids Larkipora defeated HS Shangran, and in the second, Mehmoodabad overcame HS Deheruna. The final match between Whiz Kids Larkipora and Mehmoodabad is currently underway. At the district level, a coaching camp in Kabaddi for boys in the Above Age Group (AAG) is being held under the guidance of experienced mentors and physical education experts. The camp is aimed at preparing selected athletes for the forthcoming inter-zonal and state-level competitions. The sessions include structured training in physical conditioning, technical drills, team coordination, and tactical gameplay, with the initiative seen as a key step in building a strong foundation for Kabaddi at the grassroots level. Officials from the department reaffirmed their commitment to channelising youth energy through structured and meaningful sports programmes, further promoting discipline, health, and competitive spirit among school children.
