Srinagar, Dec 08: The Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA) has raised serious concerns about illegal poaching activities at Wular Lake, a Ramsar site and an ecological treasure in Kashmir.
Protected wild birds, listed under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, have reportedly been targeted by poachers, prompting urgent action from the authorities.
A WUCMA official said that poaching of scheduled species is a criminal offense and a serious threat to the delicate ecosystem of Wular Lake. “These birds play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity. Harming them is not only illegal but also disrupts the balance of this fragile ecosystem,” he added.
He said that WUCMA has acquired photos and videos of individuals involved in the illegal act and is now seeking public support to identify the culprits.
“We need cooperation from the public to bring these offenders to justice. If you recognize anyone from the images or videos, please contact us at [email protected] or send a direct message to our official page,” he said.
He also said that preserving the biodiversity of Wular Lake is a collective responsibility. “Wular Lake is a haven for many bird species and a vital component of our natural heritage. Protecting it is essential for future generations.”
The official urged citizens to support the ongoing efforts to safeguard Wular Lake and its wildlife. “Together, we can ensure that such incidents are stopped and our environment is preserved,” he added.
