Srinagar, Nov 27: The World Craft Council is mulling to launch a Seal of Authenticity of Crafts, a global certification initiative for handmade crafts from Jammu and Kashmir.
The announcement was made by WCC president Saad Al-Qaddumi during the council’s 60th jubilee celebration held in Srinagar.
On Srinagar City’s recognition as a world craft city, the president WCC said that this title will open new opportunities for Srinagar to position itself as a global hub for crafts.
As part of this vision, an MoU has been signed between WCC and the J&K government to outline initiatives such as establishing a craft museum and an incubation center to support artisans and preserve traditional skills.
The president also said that they are planning to organize Craft Next Forums in premier institutions, an idea inspired by concerns expressed by former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to ensure innovation and craftsmanship continue to flourish for future generations.
Praising Srinagar’s exceptional crafts, from Pashmina shawls and walnut wood carvings to paper machie and vibrant carpets, the President described the city as a living testament to tradition, creativity, and craftsmanship.
Recognizing artisans as the heartbeat of the city, the president said that he is committed to empower them, preserve their traditions, and boost international collaborations to ensure these crafts are passed on to future generations.
The event, hosted by the J&K government at SKICC from November 25-27, brought together delegates from 15 countries, including Kuwait, Australia, France, the UK, and Central Asia.
Artisans from around the world showcased their exceptional work to spotlight the rich craftsmanship and cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir on a global platform.
