Ganderbal, Feb 16: Residents of Cherwan, Kangan, in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district have voiced strong concerns over the deteriorating state of a solid waste management shed, which they claim has turned into an open dumping ground. The residents alleged that it was due to the failure of the Rural Development Department (RDD) Block Kangan that has failed to implement proper waste segregation.
While the construction of the shed was initially seen as a positive development, locals now say it has become a major nuisance. Unsegregated waste has led to a severe stench, health hazards, and environmental degradation, making life difficult for those living nearby.
“The smell is unbearable, and we can’t even sit outside our homes or work on our land without covering our noses,” said Ghulam Muhammad, a local resident. He added that the authorities should ensure proper waste management rather than allowing the site to become an eyesore.
Another resident, Mushtaq Ahmad Dar, questioned the logic behind constructing a waste management facility without ensuring its upkeep. “They built this shed claiming it would improve sanitation, but instead, it has turned into a waste dumping site. What was the point if they can’t even manage basic waste segregation?”
Women in the area are particularly affected, as they struggle with the constant foul smell and increased presence of stray animals. “Our children can’t play outside because dogs and cows rummage through the garbage. This is a health disaster in the making,” lamented Shabnum Jan, a resident.
Despite the growing frustration among residents, officials have defended their approach, stating that the Plastic Management Unit (PMU) in Wussan is fully operational and that efforts have been made to clean the area. They also mentioned that the garbage collection vehicle, which was earlier facing technical issues, has resumed its services in Block Kangan.
“There are nearly six to seven segregation sheds in the block, of which two are currently non-functional. However, all garbage is being segregated at the PMU plant in Wussan,” said an RDD official. He assured residents that the authorities would take immediate steps to remove any dumped waste from the management shed. “We are looking into the matter and if there is waste piling up at the site, it will be cleared soon,” he added.
