Srinagar, Apr 04: Kashmir has ushered in the spring season with a vibrant line-up of events aimed at promoting tourism, peace, and local culture. Director Tourism, Raja Yaqoob, announced that the valley will witness a series of spring celebrations over the next 10 to 15 days under the guidance of the Chief Secretary and Commissioner Secretary Tourism.

Speaking at the inaugural event, Badamwari Festival, Raja Yaqoob said, “We have started the spring festival series today. We had planned it a week earlier but due to the holy month of Ramazan, we delayed the start. Now, we are celebrating spring with full enthusiasm.”

Highlighting the upcoming events, he informed that Yusmarg will host a spring celebration, followed by the Wild Tulip Festival in Pampore and the unique Cherry Blossom Festival in Kashmir. “Cherry Blossom is famous in Japan, and we want to popularise it in Kashmir too so that tourists come and enjoy its beauty,” he said.

Yaqoob emphasized the rising tourist footfall in the Valley. “Whether it’s Taj, Radisson Collection, Lalit, or Khyber hotels, the occupancy is touching 90-100%. Around 54 flights land at Srinagar airport daily, and they are almost always full. Delhi-Srinagar flight fares are above Rs. 10,000, indicating a tourist rush,” he noted.

He added that musical and cultural programmes, along with handicraft stalls, are also being organised to promote local talent and heritage. “Through media, the message of peace in Kashmir spreads globally. Our local artists get a platform to showcase their talent, and these cultural events help place destinations on the tourist map,” Yaqoob said.

Referring to previous successes, he highlighted last October’s first-ever international marathon in Kashmir which saw participation from over 2,000 athletes, including 59 international runners. “We are planning the second edition soon,” he added.

Further, the department is working on organising an international adventure race and the prestigious World Rafting Championship in August. “It will be like a Super World Cup, with teams from each continent participating. We are in touch with the World Rafting Federation, and their president from Italy has also visited,” he revealed.

“This spring, the entire valley will celebrate across multiple destinations with cultural and heritage programmes, strengthening Kashmir’s position on the global tourism map.” he added.
