Universities should ignite imagination in young minds for innovation: LG

Jammu, Sept 05 – Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha delivered an address at the Foundation Day Ceremony of the University of Jammu today.
During his address, Lt. Governor Sinha extended his congratulations to the Vice Chancellor, faculty, and students of the University on this occasion. He emphasized the pivotal role played by higher education institutions like Jammu University in the comprehensive and rapid development of the nation.
Highlighting the University’s remarkable initiatives such as ‘Design Your Degree’ and ‘College on Wheels,’ the Lt. Governor praised its substantial contribution in enhancing J&K’s global reputation in research, innovation, and economic growth.
He noted that the University’s forward-looking approach, coupled with the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, has ensured the adoption of the finest academic practices and the cultivation of a top-notch skilled workforce to confront future challenges.
The Lt. Governor stressed the importance of encouraging independent thinking, creativity, research, and innovation within higher education institutions and among the teaching community.
He stated that all significant inventions, institutions, and novel ideas throughout history have been products of someone’s imagination, underlining that universities should aim to ignite that imaginative spark in young minds.
“Education is an endless journey of exploration and learning. It is the responsibility of teachers to creatively establish a system in their classrooms that fosters new ideas, provides clear goals, and instils dedication, confidence, optimism, and curiosity for the journey ahead,” said the Lt. Governor.
Over the last three years, higher education institutions have worked diligently to eliminate barriers between departments, create more flexible curricula to encourage lifelong learning, and continuously redefine classroom concepts to promote mentoring over traditional teaching, the Lt. Governor added.
Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jammu, provided an overview of the key initiatives taken by the university.
During the ceremony, the Lt. Governor was honoured with the Shikshan-Kul Gaurav Samman by Higher Education Institutes of J&K.
At the University, Lt. Governor Sinha inaugurated the Community Radio Station of Jammu University, 91.2 FM-Dhwani JU. He highlighted the station’s role in community participation, strengthening the education ecosystem, connecting with society, and raising awareness on various issues affecting the public.
A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the University of Jammu and IIM Jammu, aimed at promoting advancements in teaching, research, cultural understanding, entrepreneurship, innovation, and incubation.
Meanwhile, a book titled “Applied Solid State Physics,” authored by Prof. Rajni Kant and published by Wiley, was released. Former and current employees of the University were also felicitated for their outstanding services.
The event witnessed the presence ofJugal Kishore Sharma, Member of Parliament; Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Advisor to Lt. Governor; Padma Shri Prof. JS Rajput; Padma Mohan Singh; Padma Shri Balwant Thakur;. Alok Kumar, Principal Secretary, School & Higher Education, Vice-chancellors of various Universities, Directors of IIM and IIT Jammu, senior officials, faculty members, and students of Jammu University.
