Shopian, June 22: In a powerful display of unity and determination, South Asia Centre for Peace And Peoples Empowerment (SACPPE) on Thursday organised an awareness event to prevent drug abuse among people wherein large number of transport drivers and owners participated at Mega Fruit Mandi, in south Kashmir’s Shopian.
The key figures from the transport industry came together to address the alarming rise of substance abuse within society. Farooq Ahmad Bhat, a public transport driver, Suhail Zam Zam Qadri, a Motor Vehicles Inspector (MVI), and Abrar Ahmad Kripak, Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO), emerged as prominent voices, calling for urgent action to combat this menace.
Mriganka Dadwal, founder of Street Level Awareness Program (SLAP), a Delhi based NGO, emphasized the profound impact of drug consumption not only on the individuals involved but also on their families and society as a whole.
Recognizing the unique power drivers possess, she called upon fellow drivers to refuse to engage in drug peddling, thereby actively contributing to the betterment of the nation. “There is growing concern around the world about drug use and road safety. Driving under the influence of drugs is a well studied risk factor for road traffic crashes, injuries and deaths,” Mriganka said.
Farooq Bhat, speaking on behalf of public transport drivers, emphasized the profound impact of drug consumption not only on the individuals involved but also on their families and society as a whole. Recognizing the unique power they possess, he called upon fellow drivers to refuse to engage in drug peddling, thereby actively contributing to the betterment of the nation.
Suhail Qadri highlighted the pressing concern of substance abuse among youth, emphasizing the far-reaching consequences it holds for both individuals and society. With a passionate plea, he urged responsible citizens to take proactive measures, including awareness campaigns, education, and support systems, to empower young individuals to make healthier choices and build a brighter future.
ARTO Abrar Kripak unveiled an innovative approach to tackle substance abuse by harnessing the influence of those involved in the transport industry. Recognizing their strength, dedication, and unique position in society, Kripak proposed enlisting transport professionals as ambassadors against substance abuse. By empowering them with knowledge and tools, he envisioned a transformative movement where transport workers become catalysts for change.
The joint effort emphasizes collaboration and unity as the driving forces in the fight against substance abuse. By engaging the transport community, sharing information, and offering support, the campaign aims to create a society that not only rejects drug peddling but also provides a safe and supportive environment for those struggling with addiction.
The call to action resonates with citizens, policymakers, and organizations alike, as they recognize the significance of collective efforts in eradicating substance abuse. The movement aims to instill hope, raise awareness, and inspire positive change, envisioning a drug-free nation where families thrive and communities flourish.
The campaign invites individuals, organizations, and stakeholders to join hands in this noble cause, pledging their commitment to a healthier, safer society. By uniting forces, we can bring about lasting change and make a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals.
SACPPE is a government registered, non-profit and apolitical organisation which is working for the cause of all round development of the society and promotion of education, research and learning.
