Srinagar, May 17: In a renewed push to enforce road safety regulations, the Traffic Police City Srinagar Saturday launched an intensive drive around the picturesque Dal Lake area, covering Nishat, Shalimar and Harwan. The crackdown saw the seizure of several two-wheelers and cars, with minors found driving without licences or helmets among the main offenders.
The operation, led by DySP Traffic Srinagar Mehboob ul Haq, in the presence of a Mobile Magistrate, focused on on-the-spot inspections, document checks and strict action against traffic rule violations.
“There will be no leniency. We will seize and fine violators immediately,” said DYSP Mehboob Ul Haq. “Underage driving is a serious offence. We urge parents not to hand over keys to minors as it’s not only illegal but life-threatening.”
One of the campaign’s major goals is ensuring 100 percent helmet compliance for both drivers and pillion riders—something that has long been overlooked in certain parts of Srinagar. During Friday’s operation, five to six bikes operated by underage riders were seized, and warnings were issued to several others found without documentation or safety gear.
The initiative has received praise from local residents, many of whom have raised concerns in the past about reckless driving, especially in the tourist area. “We see young boys speeding without helmets almost every day. It’s terrifying,” said Ghulam Nabi, a shopkeeper in Nishat. “This drive was long overdue. I hope it continues as our children’s lives are at stake.”
Sabeena Jan, a teacher from Harwan, echoed the sentiment: “There must be accountability. A simple mistake on the road can turn into a tragedy. I am glad that the police are finally taking this seriously.”
The Traffic department is urging continued cooperation from the public, warning that ongoing drives will intensify in the coming days. “We want to create a culture of responsibility. Helmets, documents, and legal age must be respected. If we all follow the rules, we save lives,” DySP Mehboob said.
