Anantnag, Dec 20: In an unusual incident of theft, miscreants have stolen a 250-meter stretch of newly installed metal beam crash barriers along the road connecting Verinag sub-division to Kokernag sub-division, officials said on Friday.
According to Muzaffar Rasool, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) PMGSY, Sub-Division Kokernag, the theft occurred between December 10 and December 19. He mentioned that an inspection was conducted on December 10, but the theft was reported on December 19.
“The total length of the crash barriers installed along the Hangalgund to Tantraypora road was approximately 1 kilometer, out of which around 250 meters have been stolen. The stolen barriers are valued at Rs 4 to 4.5 lakh. These barriers were part of an alternate route connecting the two sub-divisions. This road falls under Kokernag sub-division and is separate from the main road,” he said.
Gulzar Ahmad, a resident of Batagund, Verinag, said that it is highly unfortunate that infrastructure meant for public safety and improved connectivity has been vandalized in this manner.
“These barriers were crucial for ensuring traveler safety and preventing accidents,” he added.
He urged the police and concerned authorities to take strict action against the culprits. “This theft is not only an act of vandalism but also a threat to public safety. Those responsible must be identified and booked under the law,” he said.
The AEE PMGSY said that the matter has been reported to the police, and an FIR has been filed.
“This road is an important alternate route for residents of both sub-divisions. The crash barriers were installed to enhance traveler safety and reduce the risk of accidents. Unfortunately, the thieves have taken advantage of the situation,” the AEE said.
He further said that the police have launched an investigation into the incident, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the miscreants.
