Srinagar, Apr 12: Dr Mehboob Beig, the General Secretary (Organisation) of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP), on Friday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for what he deemed as the undermining of Jammu & Kashmir’s identity and status by converting it into two union territories in 2019.
Responding to a query regarding the Prime Minister’s visit to Udhampur, Dr Beig highlighted the aftermath of the 2019 decision, expressing concerns over the lack of comprehensive development in the region. “Instead of progress, Jammu and Kashmir has been thrust into a state of political uncertainty, resulting in the erosion of its identity and rights over employment, trade, transport, and business opportunities,” he said.
The PDP leader pointed out the prevalence of corruption and scandals, which, he alleged, have exposed the BJP’s hollow promises, leaving behind a legacy of hate and division in the political landscape.
Regarding the National Conference’s decision to pursue its own path, Dr Beig expressed disappointment, saying there was a need for unified electoral resistance against the BJP. “Such unity was crucial to safeguarding the identity and dignity of Jammu and Kashmir in the face of ongoing oppression,” he said.
“It was a missed opportunity for collective action to represent the aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir. The unilateral decision of the National Conference had left no room for independent representation despite enduring personal and political challenges,” Mehboob Beig said.
