Terrorist killed in Sopore encounter, searches underway

Srinagar, Nov 11: An unidentified terrorist was killed in an encounter with security forces in the Rampur area of Sopore, Baramulla district, North Kashmir.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, V.K Birdi told Rising Kashmir that one terrorist was killed during the ongoing encounter in Rampur Sopore and his identity is being ascertained.
“Searches are still underway in the area and the area is still under tight security,” he said.
Another police officer at PCR, Baramulla said that acting on specific information regarding the presence of terrorists in village Rampur area of district Baramulla, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police and Army in the said area.
“During the search operation, as the joint search party approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding terrorist fired indiscriminately upon them, which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter,” he said.
The official said that in the ensuing encounter, a local terrorist was killed. Later his body was retrieved from the site of encounter. “We have cordoned off the area and lights have been installed in the area to trace suspicious activity,” he said.
The official said that in this regard a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and further investigation is in progress.
Meanwhile, Army Spokesman in a post on X said that based on specific intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists, a joint Operation launched by the Indian Army and Police in general area Rajpura, Sopore, Baramulla.
“Suspicious activity was observed by vigilant troops and on being challenged terrorists opened indiscriminate fire. Own troops effectively retaliated,” he added.
Earlier on Friday, two terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Sagipora area of Sopore. Huge chunks of arms and ammunition were recovered from their possession.
As per Army, the identities of the slain terrorists are still being verified. “Based on sources and recovered items, it appears that this group had been active in north Kashmir for some time. Their elimination is a major breakthrough for us,” it said.
