Srinagar, July 17: In recognition of its strides towards urban cleanliness and sustainable sanitation, Jammu city has been awarded the title of ‘Promising SwachhShehar’ under the SwachhSurvekshan 2024-25, the world’s largest urban cleanliness survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India.
According to the official data accessed by Rising Kashmir, Jammu was among 36 cities across India, each representing their respective State or Union Territory to receive the Promising City Award, recognizing their “notable progress in urban sanitation and commitment to Swachhata goals.” The awards were conferred at a grand ceremony held on July 17 at VigyanBhawan, New Delhi.
This year’s SwachhSurvekshan, in its 9th edition, evaluated over 4,800 urban local bodies on multiple parameters such as citizen feedback, open defecation-free status, solid waste management, wastewater treatment, and innovation in cleanliness practices.
The Promising City awards were given to cities that showed rapid, structured improvement despite resource or capacity constraints.
As per the official listings available with Rising Kashmir, Jammu city stood out for its strategic sanitation reforms, increased citizen participation, and improved solid waste infrastructure, placing it among other national winners like Patna, Guwahati, Bathinda, Bhubaneswar, and Jaipur Greater. It was also noted for aligning its sanitation roadmap with the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0.
Launched in 2016, SwachhSurvekshan is a competitive ranking framework aimed at encouraging cities to improve cleanliness and sanitation. The survey is conducted annually by the Quality Council of India (QCI) on behalf of MoHUA. It is widely regarded as the world’s largest urban sanitation survey, covering thousands of cities and lakhs of citizens across India.
In the latest edition, Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Surat (Gujarat) and Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra) continued their dominance in the Super Swachh League category (cities with over 10 lakh population). Among medium and smaller cities, the likes of Ambikapur, Karhad, Shahganj, and Panaji made their mark.
