Srinagar, May 12: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha stated on Friday that the marketplaces in Lal Chowk and old Srinagar would soon resemble those in Delhi, Chandigarh, and Mumbai, giving people the impression that they are in one of these affluent and dynamic cities.
He said this while speaking to reporters during the inauguration of the Polo View market, which was refurbished as part of the Smart City Project. Shopkeepers congratulated him and thanked the J&K administration for transforming the market’s appearance.
People in this area were inconvenienced during the job’s execution, he said, adding that he is thankful to them for cooperating in the development of the first wireless and pedestrian market, which would increase the number of customers flocking to this market.
The Smart City Project is a Rs 3000 crore multi-pronged effort to revitalise Srinagar, which has already made significant progress. As part of the scheme, the J&K government has developed cycle lanes and made bicycles available for an hourly fee at various points across the city. Roadside parking has also been made available for a charge, decreasing traffic congestion on the city’s roads significantly. The iconic clock tower, GhantaGhar, is also being renovated, as are the adjacent roads.
The city’s renovation has not only increased its aesthetic appeal but also created countless opportunities for local businesses to grow. The enhanced infrastructure, along with increased tourist traffic, has resulted in the creation of new employment and a significant boost to the economy. The project has also aided in the development of sustainable tourism, with an emphasis on conserving the city’s cultural legacy and natural beauty.
LG’s announcement regarding upcoming markets in Lal Chowk and old Srinagar has piqued the imagination of people. The markets will be built with modern facilities and infrastructure to provide a one-of-a-kind shopping experience for locals and tourists. The renovation of the markets will not only add to the city’s attractiveness, but will also help it to grow economically.
The J&K administration, including Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Mehta, SMC Mayor Junaid Azim Matoo, SMC Commissioner Athar Amir Khan, and other officials, worked together to make the Smart City Project a success. Their devotion and hard work have enabled Srinagar to be transformed into a modern and lively city while keeping its distinct identity and cultural heritage.
The continuous revitalisation of Srinagar city under the Smart City Project has resulted in considerable changes that have benefited the city’s economy, tourism, and overall quality of life The LG’s announcement about the planned markets in Lal Chowk and old Srinagar has added to the excitement, offering a one-of-a-kind shopping experience for Srinagar residents and visitors.
