Srinagar, May 10: In a bid to tackle the burgeoning environmental challenges of organic waste management, the Department of Students Welfare at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) orchestrated an Ideathoncentered on the theme “Compost/Biogas Production under the Mission Life program.”
Conducted at the Shalimar Campus on Friday, the event served as a crucible for burgeoning minds across diverse academic realms, converging to combat the pressing issue of organic waste management. Spearheaded by Dean of Students Welfare, Prof. Rafiq Shahardar, the initiative aimed to harness the inventive prowess and problem-solving acumen of students towards the conversion of organic waste into valuable resources, particularly biogas.
In a statement, Prof. Shahardar underscored the primary objective of the Ideathon, emphasizing the imperative role of interdisciplinary collaboration in nurturing sustainable solutions. By fostering a platform for ideation and innovation, the event aspired to empower students as catalysts for change in the pursuit of a greener, more sustainable future.
Judged by a distinguished panel comprising Prof. F.A. Lone from the Division of Environmental Science, Prof. Faheema Mushtaq from the Division of Vegetable Science, Dr. Mohd. Muzamil from the College of Agriculture Engineering & Technology, and Dr.Seemi Lohani, Students Welfare Officer (HQ), the Ideathon witnessed a flurry of ingenious ideas.
Dr.Seemi Lohani, the organizing Secretary of the program, commended the participants for their ingenuity and commitment to environmental stewardship. Rizwan Ul Zama Bandey from the College of Agriculture Engineering & Technology clinched the top spot, followed by Abhishek Kumar from the Faculty of Agriculture in second place and Nitish Kumar from the Faculty of Horticulture securing the third position.
The Ideathon not only showcased the potential of youth-driven innovation but also underscored SKUAST-K’s commitment to fostering sustainable practices in agriculture and environmental conservation. As the world grapples with the exigencies of climate change and resource depletion, initiatives like these serve as beacons of hope, illuminating the path towards a more resilient and eco-conscious future.
