In a world where adrenaline-seekers continuously push the boundaries of human capability, one sport stands tall – quite literally – as the ultimate test of physical and mental prowess, that is mountaineering.
Wajeeha Ali, originally hailing from the picturesque region of Kupwara in North Kashmir, has emerged as an inspiration for many as she conquers the world of mountaineering with her determination and passion. Brought up in the sacred surroundings of Hazratbal Srinagar, she began her journey into the world of adventure at a young age.
“I started mountaineering when I was 18 years old,” Wajeeha proudly states. Her adventurous spirit first found its expression during her time in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) while studying at Kothi Bagh Higher School. The NCC camping trips ignited a spark within her to explore nature and scale new heights. Little did she know that this passion would lead her on an incredible journey to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling, West Bengal.
Reflecting on her time at the institute, Wajeeha recalls, “I got an opportunity to go to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling via NCC. At first, my parents were hesitant, but my instructor convinced them, and they agreed to let me go.” With excitement and anticipation, she embarked on what she initially thought would be a simple camping experience.
However, what awaited her in Darjeeling was a rigorous 30-day mountaineering course that would put her physical and mental strength to the test. Each day started at 4 in the morning with light exercises and a 7km jog, followed by basic training. Wajeeha and her fellow trainees were then taken to West Sikkim, where the real challenge began. Carrying a hefty 25kg rucksack throughout the training, Wajeeha pushed her limits and, in the process, shed nearly 11kg of weight.
“It was worth it,” she says with a smile. Her hard work and grit paid off, and she achieved the coveted alpha grade, an achievement only bestowed upon those who excel in their training. “The training is crucial,” Wajeeha emphasizes.
“Any mountaineer who wants to climb or summit peaks should undergo basic training; otherwise, it can be dangerous. Mountaineering demands respect and caution, and tragedies have struck even the most experienced adventurers.” she said.
She knows the importance of being well-prepared, especially after witnessing some casualties among fellow mountaineers.
Mountaineering, often referred to as the “sport of the brave,” has evolved from a perilous expedition reserved for the most intrepid explorers to a globally embraced pursuit attracting a diverse array of thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts alike. This remarkable sport involves ascending mountains, navigating icy glaciers, and negotiating rocky terrain, presenting climbers with an exhilarating and often life-changing experience.
Upon her return from the institute, Wajeeha wasted no time in putting her newfound skills to use. She quickly summited several peaks around the valley, earning recognition and a DG commendation card from the NCC for her outstanding contributions to adventure sports. “This card is given to very few people who have made significant achievements in adventure sports,” Wajeeha explains.
Her journey doesn’t end here. Wajeeha has big plans for the future. “I want to open a club where I can train kids and female enthusiasts,” she shares. Wajeeha’s passion for mountaineering goes beyond personal accomplishments; she wants to inspire others, especially young girls, to pursue their dreams fearlessly.
“I also want to summit Everest,” Wajeeha reveals, her eyes gleaming with determination. Scaling the highest peak in the world is a daunting challenge, but for Wajeeha Ali, it is just another opportunity to prove that dreams are achievable with hard work and dedication.
As Wajeeha continues her journey as a mountaineer, she remains a beacon of hope for the youth of Kashmir and beyond. Her story is a testament to the power of passion, persistence, and the courage to chase one’s dreams against all odds. Adventurous enthusiasts eagerly await her next conquest as she sets her sights on reaching new heights, both figuratively and literally.
Wajeeha has a message to the youth who want to climb the heights and go into the adventurous sport, “”Embrace mountaineering, a thrilling sport for youth! It builds resilience, fosters teamwork, and nurtures a deep connection with nature. Conquer mountains, challenge yourself, and forge unforgettable memories. The summit awaits you!”
