Srinagar, Dec 11: Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen, Chairman of People’s Democratic Front (PDF) and former minister, has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene regarding the future of Rohingya refugees in Jammu and Kashmir. He appealed to the Central government to ensure their safety, security, and access to basic amenities, similar to provisions available to refugees in other parts of India.
In a statement issued here, Hakeem expressed deep concern over the ongoing harassment of Rohingya refugees by vested interests along communal lines in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Jammu region. “This issue should be approached from a humanitarian perspective, in accordance with international humanitarian laws applicable globally,” he said.
Highlighting the responsibilities of the central government, Yaseen urged Prime Minister and Home Minister to address the immediate needs of the Rohingya refugees. He lamented the recent disconnection of water and power supplies to numerous property owners housing Rohingya refugees and the subsequent eviction notices issued to them.
“Such actions are unfortunate and could tarnish the country’s reputation in the realm of international humanitarian standards,” Yaseen said. He said the issue of Rohingya refugees falls within the remit of the central government and called for a clear and decisive announcement regarding their security and safety.
