Srinagar, Mar 13: The Public Works (R&B) Department has informed the Jammu and Kashmir Government that all the major roads in Anantnag district in south Kashmir have the requisite width to cater to the existing traffic volume.
The information was provided by the department in the Legislative Assembly in response to an un-starred question raised by MLA Dr. S. Bashir Ahmad Veeri on steps being taken in towns of Anantnag District, especially in Bijbehara and Srigufwara to address the issue.
The house was informed that all major roads in Anantnag district have requisite width to cater to the existing traffic volume. However, there are traffic jams at certain places, majorly due to wrong parking, street vendors, and occupation of footpaths by shopkeepers.
The reply said management of traffic solely lies with the Traffic Department. The infrastructure like bypasses, dividers, and rotaries have already been provided wherever required.
The house was informed that, specifically in Bijbehara and Srigufwara sections, wrong parking is a major contributor to traffic jams.
In response to another question whether it intends to repair the roads which are in dilapidated condition in the district, the reply said the department is constantly working to improve the road conditions for the convenience of the general public.
“During the current financial year, 38 km of road length has been upgraded under various programs in district Anantnag,” the reply said.
