Ganderbal, May 22: The long-awaited relief has finally reached the parched paddy fields of Saloora village in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district after a news report by Rising Kashmir brought the severe water crisis to light.
A day ago, farmers from Saloora and nearby areas had raised alarms over the drying up of irrigation canals amid a relentless heatwave and prolonged dry spell. Cracks had begun appearing in the soil, and paddy saplings—vital to the villagers’ livelihoods—were wilting without water, sparking fears of an impending drought.
Following the report, the Irrigation and Flood Control Department acted swiftly. Officials confirmed that the issue stemmed from a pipe blockade in one of the field channels. “The problem was identified and resolved immediately after it was brought to our notice,” a department official said. “As of today, water flow has been fully restored to all affected fields with adequate discharge.”
Local farmers have confirmed the return of water to the irrigation canals, expressing relief and gratitude. “Our crops were on the verge of collapse. Thanks to the timely coverage by Rising Kashmir and the prompt action by the department, our fields are now receiving water again,” said one of the residents.
Locals have widely thanked Rising Kashmir for bringing attention to their plight, emphasizing the vital role of media in bridging gaps between communities and administration.
