Leh, Sept 26: The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, visited the Siachen Base Camp on Thursday, where she paid her heartfelt tributes at the Siachen War Memorial, a symbol of sacrifice dedicated to the soldiers and officers martyred during Operation Meghdoot.
The operation, launched on April 13, 1984, marked the Indian Army’s control over the Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battlefield.
During her visit, the President addressed the soldiers stationed at the camp. In her speech, she expressed immense pride in their dedication, stating, “As the supreme commander of the armed forces, I feel very proud of you. Every citizen of this nation salutes your bravery.” Her words resonated deeply with the soldiers, who endure some of the most challenging conditions on Earth to safeguard India’s frontiers.
President Murmu highlighted the relentless commitment of the Indian Armed Forces since the inception of Operation Meghdoot. She commended the soldiers for maintaining the security of this critical region under extreme weather conditions, where temperatures can plummet to minus 50 degrees Celsius, with heavy snowfall adding to the harsh environment.
She further emphasized that despite these challenges, the soldiers remain vigilant and devoted to their duties, offering extraordinary examples of sacrifice and tolerance in protecting the motherland. The President reassured the soldiers that their bravery and sacrifices are deeply respected and acknowledged by every Indian citizen.
Meanwhile in a post on “X” President Droupadi Murmu paid her tributes at the Siachen War Memorial. “This Memorial is a symbol of the sacrifice of soldiers and officers who have been martyred since the Indian Army began Operation Meghdoot on the Siachen Glacier on April 13, 1984.”
