• LG Sinha felicitates winners of First International Marathon in J&K

Srinagar, Oct 20: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah lauded the success of the first-ever International Marathon held in Kashmir, marking a significant moment in the region’s sporting calendar.
The event, which saw participation from over 1,700 runners across India and 12 foreign nations, featured both a 42-kilometer full marathon and a 21-kilometer half marathon respectively.
Speaking at the felicitation ceremony, LG Sinha credited the transformation of J&K to the decisive leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has paved the way for hosting global events. “The Prime Minister’s commitment to peace and normalcy in J&K has enabled people to enjoy international events like cricket matches, Formula-4 races, and global gatherings such as the G20 Summit and International Yoga Day,” he stated.
Highlighting the record tourist arrivals, LG Sinha added that the surge is a testament to the peace, progress, and prosperity in the region. He further announced plans to organize a similar marathon in Jammu in the near future, emphasizing J&K’s potential as a global sporting hub.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who personally completed the 21-kilometer half marathon, expressed hope that the Kashmir Marathon would become an annual event recognized on par with prestigious marathons worldwide. “I hope the Kashmir Marathon will be organized every year and earn a place among the well-known marathons around the globe,” said Omar Abdullah.
In a post on social media platform X, Omar said, “I’ve never run more than 13 kilometers in my life, and that too only once. Today, I just kept going, motivated by the energy of other amateur runners like myself.”
In another post on X, CM Abdullah stated, “I’m so damn pleased with myself today. I completed the Kashmir Half Marathon – 21 KM at an average pace of 5 min 54 sec per KM. I’ve never run more than 13 KM in my life, and that too only once. Today, I just kept going, propelled by the enthusiasm of other amateur runners like myself. No proper training, no running plan, no nutrition. Picked up a banana and a couple of khajoor along the way. The best part was running past my home with family and others cheering me on.”
Extending his congratulations to all participants, he shared, “I didn’t expect to finish my half marathon. Running alongside other participants encouraged me to complete it.”
The event was organised by the Department of Tourism with the aim of showcasing the improving situation in Kashmir and promoting the region as a prime destination for international events. Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty, who participated in the flag-off ceremony, expressed admiration for J&K’s hospitality and scenic beauty. “This will become one of the most participated marathons in the world. Where else can you run 42 kilometers in paradise?” he said.
The marathon saw the participation of top long-distance runners from India and elite athletes from Europe and Africa.
The event was graced by dignitaries including Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Commissioner Secretary, Tourism Yasha Mudgal, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, and Minister for Youth Services and Sports Satish Sharma, along with senior officials, prominent citizens, sportspersons, and youth.
