Srinagar, Jan 22: In light of the ongoing concerns regarding water scarcity following last year’s severe dry spell, the Chief Engineer of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, Braham Jyoti Sharma, assured the public that water levels are expected to rise significantly following recent snowfall.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Sharma explained that the drop in water levels during winter was anticipated, and he expects that melting snow in the coming months will naturally replenish river channels and groundwater levels.
“Although we faced significant challenges last summer due to low rainfall and snowfall, resulting in a decline in river and groundwater levels, we managed to ensure water supply through public cooperation. Our dedicated staff worked relentlessly to maintain drinking and irrigation supplies, and we are optimistic that these challenges will not recur,” said Sharma.
Sharma further emphasized that the drought action plan, which has already been implemented by both the PHE and Irrigation departments, will continue to address water shortages in the future. The plan is designed to guarantee an adequate supply of water for both drinking and agricultural needs, even under adverse conditions.
Regarding snowfall, he expressed relief that the snowfall in early December and January, although not abundant, has positively impacted the water supply situation. “With God’s blessings, we are hopeful that we will not face the same water supply challenges next year,” he added.
Sharma also highlighted the near-completion of the Jal Jeevan Mission project, aimed at enhancing water supply systems. While some delays in the delivery of electromechanical components have slowed progress, the government remains committed to completing the project by March 31, 2025. This project will provide a consistent and reliable water supply to the region’s residents.
To further address public concerns, the PHE department has set up dedicated control rooms at each division and at the Waterworks Division in Srinagar. Contact numbers for assistance are available through print media and widespread publicity, ensuring citizens can easily request support.
